Welcome to Winter!!  January is upon us and so is winter events. We will start off the month on the 18th with a winter hike at Ashley Reservoir. We will do tree rubbings to identify trees by their bark.  I will send out handouts for what would be appropriate winter hiking clothing.

On the 23rd of the month, the members will be create a variety of bird seed feeders. We will discuss what birds stay in New England during the winter months, what they eat and how they survive the cold.

Our third event for the month will be at the Beyond Crayons Art studio but will be more of a garden event. This is an intro to Herbalism Workshop. We will discuss how herbs can be used for health.  We will learn about herbs that are beneficial for our skin. We will create an herbal infusion and use an infusion to make a dry skin lotion to help heal dry chapped winter skin.

What an exciting month ahead. We start off the month on February 1st with a trip to Shattuck's Sugarhouse. Nate at the sugarhouse will give the members a breakdown on the maple sugar making process.

On February 7th we will learn the papermaking process and press floral seeds into the paper. After cutting the paper into hearts we will use the paper to create custom Valentines cards to give to friends or family. Receivers of the cards can plant the hearts into the ground come spring to grow flowers.

On February 22nd, we have planned a hike at Lunden Pond and Temple Brook Loop in Monson. We will use a tracking guide to see if we can find any animal tracks in the snow.

On February 27th, we will be doing an Into to Hydroponics Workshop at Beyond Crayons Art Studio where members will learn how to grow plants without soil. They will bring home their own mini hydroponic unit with a seed of their choice ready to grow.
